International and interdisc iplinary in scope\, the symposium brings together a conversation on tempor al artifacts and the lived experience of time between researchers working in the fields of communication and media studies\, cultural studies\, hist ory of science and technology\, cinema studies\, social science\, and comp uter science.\n\nThe event will interrogate the ways in which timekeeping technologies\, time-management practices\, and temporal infrastructures in fluence and coordinate the movements and labor of people\, matter\, and si gns and how these technologies—from medieval clocks to smartphones and amb ient technologies—feed back into temporal orders that both shape and trans form socioeconomic realities\, cultural and artistic practice\, and contem porary scholarship on time and media.\n\nThe keynote speaker is John Durha m Peters\, A. Craig Baird Professor of Communication Studies at the Univer sity of Iowa. All speakers represent a cross section of the most innovativ e directions of contemporary media research. Nearly half the researchers h ave devoted a significant amount of their research to critically investiga ting relations of temporality\, while the other half have been invited bec ause of their wide-ranging expertise in contemporary network and infrastru cture studies to reengage their objects through specific questions of temp orality. Creating a conversation between these diverse voices\, the sympos ium aims to reevaluate theories of temporality through fresh case studies and new empirical evidence.\n\nHardwired Temporalities is free and open to the public.
