Amassed in Guangzhou\, presented in Philadelphia \, and finally sold at a London auction in 1799\, van Braam’s collection o f Chinese art had long been thought lost. The recent rediscovery of works from the London sale not only provides tangible objects from which to re-i magine the nonextant parts of van Braam’s collection\, but also prompts an exploration of terms such as “quality” and “authenticity” in the context of art intended for export. Van Braam’s art collection was well-known amon g eighteenth-century French refugees in Philadelphia\, and his circle’s de scriptions of the work present us with some of the earliest art historical ly inflected assessments of Chinese painting written by Europeans. I discu ss those texts\, and the paintings to which they respond\, as part of an e xtended body of landscape imagery created in and negotiated between cosmop olitan port cities in Asia\, Africa\, Europe and North America\, arguing t hat van Braam’s display of Chinese art was both a local and global constru ct.\n\nFacebook event\n DTSTART:20190926T200000Z DTEND:20190926T230000Z LOCATION:W-215\, Arts Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0G5\, 853 rue She rbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Speaker Series | Dawn Odell 'Chinese Art and the Global Eighteenth Century' URL:/ahcs/channels/event/speaker-series-dawn-odell-chi nese-art-and-global-eighteenth-century-300065 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
