The event poster is attached.\n \nPlease join us next week on Thursday\, April 8 at 4PM EST (on Zoom) for two great presentations and\, afterwards\, a Q&A period¨C¨Cwe look forward t o your participation!\n\nYou can join the meeting at the following link:\n \nhttps://mcgill.zoom.us/j/86701910574?pwd=dXM4NTBjbXBoMEV3ZkwwWGVPVno4QT0 9\n\n¡ª\n\nNicolas Holt\, ¡°Sculpture in the Electromagnetic Field¡±\n In the late 1960s\, Chilean-American media artist Juan Downey constructed a serie s of electronic sculptures designed to detect\, produce\, and transform el ectromagnetic energy into different\, typically more perceivable forms for their human spectators. These sculptures¡ªoutfitted with different sensors \, transmitters\, and receivers¡ªcould turn inaudible radar waves or cosmic background radiation into light\, sound\, and even mechanical vibration. The current scholarly consensus is that these works and their participativ e conditions are emblematic of then contemporary\, cybernetic theories of information\, communication\, and feedback. What¡¯s less often remarked abo ut these works\, and what this presentation will foreground\, are the ener getic specifics of the electromagnetic fields they generate and by which t hey are sustained. Through this shift in emphasis\, this presentation will show how the electronic sculptures can be understood not as embodying cyb ernetic thought\, but rather making evident where even the most advanced t echnical media of the information age only ever offer a partial glimpse of the vast energetic environment that surrounds and activates them. In so d oing\, this presentation approaches an aesthetics of energy\, and offers a n alternative to the totalizing logic of the cybernetic paradigm that has thus far dominated the history of 1960s media art.\n\n?\n\nYuting Liu\, 'F luid Boundaries: Time\, Space\, Images in the 'Guanyin Jingbian' of Mogao Cave 45'\n\nThe relationship between texts and images is a critical issue in understanding Jingbian (sutra painting ½›×ƒ)\, a kind of visual represent ation of Buddhist scriptures\, and attracted many scholars to provide thei r understanding of this art format. This relationship in the Guanyin Jingb ian (Avalokite?vara Sutra PaintingÓ^Òô½›×ƒ) of Mogao cave 45 in Dunhuang is pa rticularly prominent. By zooming on this painting\, this study will discus s the relationship of the texts and images\, and ask questions like if the creation of the painting strictly follows the texts or not and how the me dieval Chinese understood the painting. While the painting was painted bas ed on the Guanyin Jing (Avalokite?vara S¨±tra Ó^Òô½›)\, a fluid relationship o f time\, space\, and images\, which are absent in the sutra\, are formed i n the painting. This study aims to understand these ambiguities of this pa inting by situating it with the related texts\, and the visual culture of Medieval China. It contends the Guanyin Jingbian is not an illustration of the Guanyin Jing but has its own visual logic. It demonstrates the painti ng reflects the imagined world created within the visual culture of mediev al China\, which was featured by the beliefs of efficacious icons.\n DTSTART:20210408T200000Z DTEND:20210408T213000Z SUMMARY:AHCS Student Speaker Series #4 ¨C Nicolas Holt & Yuting Liu URL:/ahcs/channels/event/ahcs-student-speaker-series-4 -nicolas-holt-yuting-liu-330194 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
