The Metropolitan Police was implicated\, as were certain poli ticians\, for their inappropriate ties with members of the press. And\, th en\, there was Rupert Murdoch himself\, who was forced to close down the l ongstanding News of the World\; accept the dissolution of his bid for cont rol of satellite network BSkyB\; and step down as director of News Interna tional\, News Corp’s British division. After receiving evidence from appr oximately 637 witnesses\, Lord Justice Leveson’s Inquiry into the Culture\ , Practices and Ethics of the Press\, issued a report in November 2012 rec ommending the establishment of an independent self-regulatory body with a statutory underpinning. The report alone caused an uproar within the indus try and split the Coalition\; and Prime Minister David Cameron’s decision to forego the statutory underpinning of the new watchdog has left victims of the scandal disappointed – with some publically calling it “a compromis e of a compromise.” Journalist and author\, Sarah Ellison\, and Des Freed man\, Reader of Communications and Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths\, will e xplore the implications of Leveson’s report for media freedom and democrat ic reform in the second of Media@ɬ﷬’s two part series on The Murdoch A ffair and the Leveson Inquiry: A Critical Assessment of the Hackgate Scand al. The panel discussion will take place on Thursday\, March 28\, at 5:30 p.m. in Leacock 232\, 855 Sherbrooke West. It is free and open to the publ ic.      Part II: Panel  The Hacking Scandal: A Pyrrhic Victory? | Sara h Ellison\, author and journalist Journalism\, truth and reconciliation: the Leveson Inquiry and implications for a democratic news media | Des Fre edman\, Goldsmiths DTSTART:20130328T213000Z DTEND:20130328T213000Z LOCATION:Room 232\, Leacock Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 2T7\, 855 r ue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Media@ɬ﷬ presents: The Murdoch Affair and the Leveson Inquiry: A Critical Assessment of the Hackgate Scandal URL:/ahcs/channels/event/mediamcgill-presents-murdoch- affair-and-leveson-inquiry-critical-assessment-hackgate- END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
