For Indigenous entrepreneurs, business can be a vessel for culture

When Brittanny Janvier enrolled in the Master of Management program at ɬ�﷬ in 2022, she was the only Indigenous student in her class. Now, Janvier is ɬ�﷬’s Director of Indigenous Initiatives, and is creating space for Indigenous entrepreneurs on campus. A recent event focused on how Indigenous-led businesses can serve as a powerful vessel for cultural narrative.

In the 2025 Major League Baseball playoffs, the Toronto Blue Jays pitching staff has often looked dominant, even against some of the best batters in the world. Sam Greene (BCom’20, MMA’21) has helped them do it. A former varsity baseball player at ɬ�﷬, Greene started out in baseball research for the Blue Jays and became an Assistant Pitching Coach in 2024. “Sam Greene is a geek, but many of the pitchers on this team are too,” said Chris Bassitt, a Blue Jays pitcher who has excelled as a middle reliever in the playoffs.

This winter, three of the ten ɬ�﷬ offices awarded new Sustainability Workplace Certifications for their sustainable practices were from the Desautels Faculty of Management. Notably, a collaborative Desautels office, formed by the Laidley Centre for Business Ethics and Equity, EDI, the Lewtas Office of Experiential Learning, and TLS Management teams, earned a Platinum certification, the highest possible rating. The Sustainable Growth Initiative (SGI) advanced to a Gold certification, and Desautels IT achieved Silver.

Tariff loophole fuelling Canadian warehouse sector

Tariffs drive up prices for businesses, but some companies are finding a creative loophole to avoid some US tariffs. When a company imports a tariffed good, it pays a tariff. But it doesn’t pay a tariff if the goods are only passing through on the way to a final destination. This creates an incentive for US companies to store inventory in Canada. They can park products here until they sell them, and only pay tariffs on goods that are actually bound for the US market.
