 ermination\, Walter Lee\, a black chauffeur on\nChicago鈥檚 South Side\, dre
 ams of a better life and hopes to use\nmoney from his father's life insura
 nce settlement to open a liquor\nstore. His mother\, who rejects the liquo
 r business\, wants to use\nthe money to buy a proper house for the family.
  Even as they are at\nodds with one another over their dreams and visions 
 for the future\,\nthe family must also endure conflicts with the world aro
 und\nthem.\n\nDeeply committed to the black struggle for equality and huma
 n\nrights\, Lorraine Hansberry would have had a long and brilliant\ncareer
  as a writer had her life not been cut short by cancer at the\nage of 35. 
 A Raisin in the Sun\, the first play by a black\nwoman to be produced on B
 roadway\, won the New York Drama Critics\nCircle Award. Hansberry was the 
 youngest writer - and the first\nblack writer - to receive the award.\n\nS
 ean Carney is an Associate Professor of Drama and Theatre in\n涩里番鈥檚 Dep
 artment of English. He is the author of 'Brecht and\nCritical Theory: Dial
 ectics and Contemporary Aesthetics' and has\npublished essays in 'Modern D
 rama'\, 'Theatre Journal'\, the 'Journal\nof Dramatic Theory and Criticism
 '\, 'Theatre Survey'\, 'Essays in\nTheatre'\, 'ImageTexT'\, the 'Iowa Jour
 nal of Cultural Studies and\nEnglish Language Notes'. He has directed stud
 ents in three plays at\n涩里番: Orra by Joanna Baillie\, Twelfth Night by
 \nWilliam Shakespeare and Playhouse Creatures by April De\nAngelis. He is
