 Photography\, Body function and\nRationalized Fracture Care (WWI and 1920s
  Vienna)'\nAbstract: When the Austrian surgeon Lorenz\nBöhler created his 
 machine-like system of rationalized fracture\ncare behind the trenches in 
 WWI\, he documented the outcome of his\ntreatment in a striking way. He to
 ok photographs of his patients\,\nlined up naked\, and performing synchron
 ous movements . In my talk\,\nI am going to explore the rationale of this 
 unusual way of\nrepresenting bodies. I will put Böhler’s images in the con
 text of\ncontemporary orthopedic photography and Böhler’s project of\nrati
 onalized fracture care in particular\, and discuss parallels and\npossible
  cultural resonances with scientific management and Vienna\nModernism.\nTh
 omas Schlich is Professor and Canada Research\nChair in History of Medicin
 e (renewed 2007) at the Department of\nSocial Studies of Medicine at McGil
 l University. After working as a\nphysician at the University Hospital in 
 Marburg\, Germany\, he\npursued his historical interests in different rese
 arch and teaching\npositions in Cambridge\, England\, Stuttgart\, Germany\
 , and Freiburg\,\nGermany. Before moving to Montreal in September 2002 he 
 held a\nHeisenberg Fellowship of the German Research Council (DFG). He has
 \nworked on surgery's connections to science and industry in the\ntwentiet
 h century\, the history of organ transplantation\,\nbacteriology\, disease
  concepts in modern medicine\, physiology and\nthe relation of medicine an
 d Judaism. His main research focus is on\nthe rise of modern surgery (1800
 -2000). Combining medical history\nwith approaches from the history of tec
 hnology as well as science\nand technology studies he examines how surgery
  achieved the high\nlevel of technical effectiveness it has today. At the 
 same time he\nlooks at how surgery became built into the fabric of modern 
 society\nand culture. His work thus aims at providing a new and better bas
 is\nfor understanding surgery’s current status as the most important\nbut 
 least questioned technique of body manipulation.\n
