In 1820\, on\nhis way to Mecca \, he traveled in Syria\, Iraq and spent some time in\nEgypt where he met the reformist Muhammad Ali.\nBack in Algeria\, after fighting against the French colonizers\nfor over 10 years\, he was deported as a prisoner of wa r to\nMarseille\, France. Upon regaining his freedom\, he settled in\nDama scus where he dedicated most of his time to meditation and\nspiritual teac hing.\nHe died in 1883 and was buried in Damascus near the great Sufi\nthi nker Ibn Arabi (1165-1240).\nDisplaying 16 historical books\, photos and m aps\, this exhibition\noffers the visitor an opportunity to get to know th e man\, the\nleader and the scholar as well as his outstanding destiny.\nI slamic Studies\nLibrary (Morrice Hall\, 1st floor).
