However\, c ongenitally-deaf\nchildren have no concept of what sound is\, and thus hav e highly\nvariable behavioral responses when initially exposed to it.\nThe refore\, there is a critical clinical need for an objective\nmeasure of wh ether or not a cochlear implant is providing\nappropriate auditory stimula tion to a deaf child both immediately\npostimplantation and across the cou rse of the first few years after\nthe child begins using the device. Data from our own and other labs\nindicate that there are clear neural markers of auditory processing\nspecific to language in normal hearing children\, and that they are\ndistinct from markers of other forms of auditory proces sing (e.g.\,\nmusic). In recent work\, we have begun tracking changes in c ortical\nactivity in infants and young children in response to specific\na uditory stimulation following cochlear implantation. In this talk\,\nI wil l review these and other data demonstrating how near-infrared\nspectroscop y can supplement behavioral measures of auditory\nprocessing in infants an d young children.\nBio\nDr. Heather Bortfeld is an Associate Professor in the University\nof Connecticut's Dept. of Psychology where she directs the Husky\nPup Language Lab. She is also a Senior Scientist at Haskins\nLabor atories. Her research focuses on developmental speech and\nlanguage using NIRS (Near-Infrared Spectroscopy).\n DTSTART:20120427T173000Z DTEND:20120427T190000Z LOCATION:CA\, 1160 Pine Ave. West\, 1160 Pine Ave. West\, Rosalind and Morr is Goodman Research Centre\, Room 501\, Montreal SUMMARY:Heather Bortfeld: Assessing developmental change in normal and impa ired auditory processing URL:/channels/event/heather-bortfeld-assessing-develop mental-change-normal-and-impaired-auditory-processing-216122 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
