These design choices\n enable a system that is scalable\, flexible and fault-resistant by\n redundancy. Despite this\, recent research has shown that robot swarms\n are prone to Byzantine faults (e.g.\, when communicatio n channels are\n tampered\, or when faults from one robot can propagate to its peers).\n In the absence of supervision or central control\, robot swar ms that\n operate in the real-world may be prone to failures caused by faul ts\,\n attacks or exploitation.\n\nBlockchain technology is a new research field that combines concepts\n from micro-economics and cryptography to add ress Byzantine-fault\n tolerance in peer-to-peer internet networks. Similar ly to the human\n agents in blockchain networks\, robots can exhibit a wide variety of\n behaviors that can be classified as Byzantine. In our researc h\, we\n consider that robots may be faulty (due to hardware malfunctions)\ ,\n malicious (due to tampering from adversaries) or non-altruistic\n (becau se they have been programmed by self-motivated individuals).\n\nIn this pr esentation I will provide a short introduction to swarm\n robotics and bloc kchain technology while diving deeper into the\n 'oracle problem': how to s ecurely validate the information that is\n proposed by potentially Byzantin e robots in a decentralized way.\n\n \n\nBio:\n Alexandre Pacheco is a Ph.D . student at IRIDIA\, the Artificial\n Intelligence research laboratory of the Université Libre de Bruxelles\,\n under the supervision of Professor Ma rco Dorigo. Before that he\n completed his BSc. degree in Mechanical engine ering at Instituto\n Superior Técnico\, in Lisbon\, and MSc. degree in Syst ems and Control\n engineering at the Technical University of Delft where he graduated in\n 2018. Throughout 2017 he was a control systems intern at In telligent\n Systems Division at the NASA Ames Research Center.\n \n Alexandre 's PhD research combines swarm intelligence\, blockchain\n technology and e conomics\, investigating how complex swarm behaviours\n emerge from the eco nomic interactions of self-interested robots\, and\n how a Byzantine-tolera nt swarm operation can be achieved using\n crypto-economic mechanisms.\n\n  \n\n\n Acknowledgment:\n This talk is part of our ongoing 2022 bilateral coo peration between\n Québec and the Brussels-Capital Region\, jointly support ed by the\n Québec Ministry of International Relations and la Francophonie (MRIF)\n and the Brussels Regional Public Service (SPRB).\n DTSTART:20230206T180000Z DTEND:20230206T190000Z LOCATION:McConnell Engineering Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0E9\, 34 80 rue University SUMMARY:Real-world robots are not eusocial ants: Byzantine-resistance in sw arm robotics systems using blockchain technology URL:/cim/channels/event/real-world-robots-are-not-euso cial-ants-byzantine-resistance-swarm-robotics-systems-using-blockchain-351 775 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
