Argerie Tsimicalis

Argerie TsimicalisDr. Argerie Tsimicalis is an Associate Professor, Ingram School of Nursing and Program Director, Global Oncology, Gerald Bronfman Department of Oncology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences; an Associate Member, Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences, ɬÀï·¬; and a Junior 2 Research Scholar (2024–2028), Fonds de recherche Québec-Santé. She also serves as a Nurse Scientist at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada and the ɬÀï·¬ Health Centre (MUHC). As one of the few nurses in Canada trained as a Child Health Scientist—and among the less than 1% of nurses nationally who hold a PhD—she leads a distinctive research program focused on understanding the costs and benefits of childhood illness (i.e. cancer) and disability (e.g. osteogenesis imperfecta) for children and their families.

Drawing on doctoral and postdoctoral training in health economics, child health, informatics, and health policy, Dr. Tsimicalis works to make visible—and when possible, quantify—the economic impacts families face when a child has a chronic illness or disability. Her research highlights major gaps in capturing child and family perspectives in health economic evaluations, with implications for health services, resource allocation, and policy, particularly in settings where families may face catastrophic costs, including the decision of abandoning their child’s cancer treatment in low and middle-income countries. By building partnerships, Dr. Tsimicalis seeks to render the costs associated with an illness visible and to collaboratively create new programs, resources, and policies to help lessen their costs.

She has published extensively with international collaborators across diverse disciplines and supervises students from varied academic and personal backgrounds, including those with childhood health conditions or sibling caregiving experience. Dr. Tsimicalis offers transdisciplinary training opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students and is committed to fostering the next generation of researchers and sustaining long-term collaborative partnerships with her trainees. Together, they create novel health services, programs and resources including songs, theatre, and books, to optimize the health and well-being of children with chronic conditions and their families.
