The theme for CIES 2023 is 'Improving Education for a More Equitable Wo rld'.\n\nIn a session titled 'Gender-based violence within educational spa ces: Policy\, practice and lived experiences of students'\, Professor Shar iff will serve as the discussant and share her expertise. The session will contributes to existing scholarship on gender-based violence in two cruci al ways. First\, it investigates the structural and cultural features of i nstitutions and societies that sustain gender-based violence. Second\, by bringing together empirical data on gender-based violence from three diffe rent continents (Africa\, Asia\, and Europe)\, this panel will provide an opportunity for a critical exploration of the causes of gender-based viole nce as well as how manifestations of gender-based violence are sustained b y culturally specific notions linked to masculinity/femininities\, ageism\ , casteism\, etc. \n\nShannon Hutcheson will present her research in a ses sion titled 'Overlooked Discourses on Intersections of Race and Internatio nal Student Status: Best Practices for Researchers'. Using critical framew orks\, including critical discourse analysis which considers the role of i nequality and privilege in research and experience\, Shannon will offer so me best practices for researchers and stakeholders in international educat ion.
