Dr. Ades is a general internist with fellowship training in vascular medicine and thrombosis at McMaster University and holds a Master’s degree in Health Professions Education from University of Ottawa, bringing strong expertise in curriculum design, learner assessment, and program evaluation.

In Memoriam: Dr. David Shannon

A stalwart of the Division of General Internal Medicine, Dr. David Shannon, passed away on October 12, 2025. Easily recognized by his signature bow tie, white mustache, radio voice, and bermuda shorts (when weather allowed), David taught generations of trainees at the Montreal General Hospital, many of whom are now faculty members. Alongside his emergency room consultation and clinical teaching unit supervision, he had a large outpatient practice in community-based GIM, a perspective that he brought to his teaching.

New immunotherapy shows promise for long-term HIV control without daily medication

Encouraging results from a Nature Medicine study led by Dr. Jean-Pierre Routy mark an important milestone in HIV research. The first-in-human clinical trial tested budigalimab, an anti-PD-1 antibody commonly used in cancer therapy, to see if it could safely help people with HIV control the virus without daily antiretroviral medication (ART).
