Abstract

This presentation discusses a synthesis of empirical evidence on IT exploitation, IT exploration, and IT ambidexterity by meta-analyzing prior research that has produced mixed and sometimes contradictory findings due to fragmented theorizing and operationalization. Using a systematic literature search, 39 peer-reviewed primary studies (∑N = 7,772) are identified and correlations linking IT exploitation and IT exploration to performance and agility outcomes are extracted. Mixed-effects meta-regressions show reliable positive average associations with performance and agility, alongside substantial heterogeneity across studies. Moderator analyses indicate that the IT exploitation–performance relationship is stronger below the firm level, IT ambidexterity–performance relationship is weaker in North America/Western Europe than elsewhere, and single-respondent designs inflate IT ambidexterity–agility relationships. The paper concludes with a research agenda emphasizing subunit-level designs, longitudinal tests (especially for IT exploration payoffs), and clearer theorizing about how IT ambidexterity is built and balanced and how emerging automation/AI may shift its boundary conditions.
