Published: 7 April 2026

Tech giants play an increasingly important role in the economy and in our everyday lives, but companies like Alphabet, Amazon and Apple are all based in the United States. In an age of heightened geopolitical tensions, some are calling for greater domestic control over the digital infrastructure we’ve all come to rely on.

“These American companies have access to Canadian data,” says Emmanuelle Vaast, Professor of Information Systems at ɬ﷬ Desautels. “And this data could be summoned by the U.S. government.” Companies like QLUB are trying to give Quebeckers an alternative. The Montreal-headquartered social network aims to foster authentic connections, and the data it collects is stored in Quebec.
