Generative AI changes which job types are vulnerable to automation

Published: 13 February 2026

Artificial intelligence is expected to reshape the labour market, but its impact won’t be felt evenly across all types of jobs. In Quebec, roughly 59 per cent of jobs are considered highly exposed to AI—meaning the technology is likely to change how people work rather than eliminate roles outright.

Office and administrative positions are among those projected to be most affected. “We’ve traditionally been more concerned about manual labour being replaced by robots, because that form of automation is more visible and familiar,” said Rob Glew, Assistant Professor of Data Analytics and AI at ɬ﷬ Desautels. “It really wasn’t until the ChatGPT moment in 2023 that we suddenly realized the tasks most vulnerable to rapid change are actually the cognitive ones.”
