Critical Interventions in Law, Finance & Climate Change

A Conference by the Business Law Platform at 涩里番鈥檚 Faculty of Law and the CIBC Office Sustainable Finance at 涩里番鈥檚 Sustainable Growth Initiative

This event was help on May 2-3, 2025 at the 涩里番 Faculty of Law.

Inaugural Conference for the Canadian & Transnational Network for Sustainable Law+Business (CTN-SLB).

Business + Law is different from Business Law. With this framing in mind 鈥 and recognising the plethora of issues emerging at the intersection of law, business and finance in an age of rapid climate and technological change 鈥 and the University's Sustainable Growth Initiative launched a new collaboration and graduate student mentorship project, under the leadership of the CIBC Office of Sustainable Finance, led by Professor Peer Zumbansen.

The "Canadian & Transnational Network for Sustainable Law + Business鈥 (CTN-SLB)" was inaugurated in early May 2025 with an international conference honoring the work of Karl Polanyi in an age of financialization and geopolitical change. The launch conference laid the basis for the Network to facilitate collaboration and mentorship in a range of business law and sustainable governance-related fields between Canadian, US, Latin-American and European schools. At the core of the Network is the joint pursuit of research, graduate supervision, and event organization in Canada and beyond, including the launch of the first-ever Canadian/Transnational "Junior Faculty Business+Law Forum."

Key focus areas presented at the inaugural CTN-SLB Conference on May 2nd-3rd included global value chains and modern slavery, the coloniality of private law, financialisation, the increasing importance of data and digital technologies in the economy, and pension fund reform.
