Robert F. Engle, co-recipient of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Economics, is a leading expert in time series analysis and the creator of autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARCH), a method for the statistical modelling of time-varying volatility. His work revolutionized financial econometrics and is widely used in asset pricing and risk management. He is Co-Director of the NYU Stern Volatility Institute and co-founded the Society for Financial Econometrics.

Professor Fernando Saltiel receives tenure

The Department of Economics is pleased to announce that Professor Fernando Saltiel has been granted tenure. Professor Saltiel joined ɬ�﷬ in 2020 and has established himself as a leading researcher in labour and education economics. His work examines how cognitive and non-cognitive skills affect labour market outcomes, the role of firms in shaping skill development, and the impact of business cycles on labor market outcomes. We congratulate Professor Saltiel on this well-deserved recognition of his contributions to research, teaching, and service.

Professor Fabian Lange delivers Innis Lecture at the 2026 Canadian Economic Association Meeting

The Department of Economics is pleased to announce that Professor Fabian Lange delivered the Harold Innis Lecture at the 60th Annual Meetings of the Canadian Economics Association, held at Simon Fraser University in May 2026. The Innis Lecture, established in 1974 in honour of the great Canadian economist Harold Adams Innis, is awarded in recognition of outstanding contributions to economics in the broad sense in which Innis construed the subject.

Department Welcomes New Associate Professor Maggie E.C. Jones

The Department of Economics is pleased to announce that Professor Maggie E.C. Jones will be joining our faculty as an Associate Professor in August 2025. Professor Jones is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at Emory University and a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. She holds a PhD in Economics from Queen's University (2018) and has established herself as a leading scholar in economic history, labor economics, and the economics of education.

Sonia Laszlo's promotion to Full Professor

Professor Laszlo has served the Department of Economics as an Assistant Professor of Economics from 2003-2010, and as Associate Professor since 2010. She has served in numerous administrative roles including Director of the Institute for the Study of International Development.

Professor Gendron-Carrier joined ɬ�﷬ in 2018 and has established himself as a leading researcher in urban and labour economics. His work examines interactions between economic agents in cities at localized scale as well as the impacts of transportation infrastructure on urban development. We congratulate Professor Gendron-Carrier on this well-deserved recognition of his contributions to research, teaching, and service.

Francisco Ruge-Murcia awarded the Senior Houblon-Norman Fellowship from the Bank of England for 2025-2026

This prestigious fellowship is awarded by the Bank of England to a tenured full or chaired professor to promote research into and disseminate knowledge and understanding of the working, interaction and function of financial business institutions in the UK and elsewhere and the economic conditions affecting them. The Houblon-Norman Fellowship was established in 1944 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Bank of England and it is named after the first Governor of the Bank, Sir John Houblon, and the Governor at the time of the anniversary, Montagu Norman.
