Scientists who seek to report facts\, data\, and pr ojections are often by necessity the bearers of bad news. Yet how they com municate their findings and research to the world matters greatly.\n\nClim ate change is arguably the most important story of our time. How we tell t hat story – the multiple stories – of climate change\, has great impact. W e cannot simply put forward a narrative of doom and gloom\, dystopia\, or end of the world. We need a range of moods and voices\, and to include opt imism\, survival\, resilience\, transcendence and positivity\, to carry us through dark times and help us make tough choices. We must imagine our fu ture with hope!\n\nThe science fiction community has understood this. Hope punk is a speculative fiction genre dedicated to positive narratives of so cial change and transformation\, emphasizing empathy\, kindness\, communit y\, and care. “Hopepunk says that in this world of brutal cynicism and nih ilism\, being kind is a political act. An act of rebellion. It's about dem anding a better\, kinder world\,” says writer Alexandra Rowland\, who coin ed the term hopepunk. There is also a growing scientific community around hopeful and positive futures\, including Seeds of Good Anthropocenes\, Bri ght Spots\, etc. But in both cases\, these small offshoots swim in a sea o f dystopia and negativity.\n\nOver two days in October 2023\, Montreal 214 0: Hopeful Futures in Science and Storytelling will bring together writers \, researchers\, and students across disciplines to tackle key questions a t the nexus of storytelling and the climate crisis. We shall workshop solu tions for communicating the climate stories of our time\, and explore how scholarly research and speculative fiction can contribute to each other’s worlds – and build a better future for us all.\n\nREGISTER HERE and visit the CONFERENCE WEBSITE for more details. \n  \n DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20231012 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20231013 LOCATION:CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H2X 1Z7\, Esplanade Tranquille\, 1442 rue Cla rk SUMMARY:Montreal 2140: Hopeful Futures in Science and Storytelling URL:/environment/channels/event/montreal-2140-hopeful- futures-science-and-storytelling-348778 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
