 \nSYNOPSIS:\n\nThe number needed to treat (NNT) is a simple measure of a t
 reatment’s impact\, increasingly reported in randomized trials and observa
 tional studies\, but often incorrectly calculated in studies involving var
 ying follow-up times. We show how these approaches can lead to erroneous v
 alues of the NNT and misleading interpretations\, illustrating using sever
 al published studies\, including trials\, observational studies and meta-a
 nalyses.  We also describe the usefulness of this measure in assessing ben
 efit–risk.\n\nOBJECTIVES:\n\nTo understand how to compute and interpret th
 e number needed to treat (NNT)\n	To recognize the complexity in studies inv
 olving varying follow-up times\n	To learn how to use the NNT in assessing b
 enefit–risk.\n\nBIO:\n\nProfessor Suissa\, who heads the Canadian Network 
 for Observational Drug Effect Studies (CNODES)\, has received the Distingu
 ished Investigator award from the Canadian Institute of Health Research (C
 IHR) of Canada and the prestigious FC Donders Professorship Award from Uni
 versiteit Utrecht\, Netherlands.  He has conducted several epidemiological
  studies on the risks and benefits of medications for the treatment of man
 y chronic diseases.  He has lectured extensively worldwide and authored ov
 er 400 peer-reviewed research papers published in scientific journals.  He
  served on the Board of Directors of several scientific societies and on t
 he editorial boards of various scientific journals including Pharmacoepide
 miology and Drug Safety\, the European Respiratory Journal\, Lancet Respir
 atory Medicine\, COPD -The Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseas
 e\, and is a Section Head editor for F-1000 Medicine.\n\n \n
