There has been a rapid change in the nature of data used in epidemiologic research and an increased focus on t he use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the analysis of those emerging d ata sources. There are many conflicting points of view on the utility of A I in an epidemiologic context and a lack of clarity on the implications fo r the discipline and public health more generally. This talk will cover th e myths\, the debates\, and the skepticism (from all sides) and outline a proposed direction for the role of AI in the future of epidemiology. We wi ll additionally cover the intersection of AI with a precision public healt h frame and the potential impact and unintended consequences of this frami ng. The talk will include implications related to bias\, health equity\, s urveillance and causal inference. We will conclude by summarizing the impl ications for epidemiology research and training.\n\nLearning Objectives\n \n\n Define Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in the c ontext of epidemiology and public health\n Describe how advanced in AI/ML i ntersects with issues related to bias\, health equity\, surveillance and c ausal inference\n Summarize the building blocks needed to build capacity an d mitigate concerns as AI applications in epidemiology grow\n\n\nSpeaker B io\n\nLaura Rosella is the Principal Investigator and Scientific Director of the Population Health Analytics Lab.
