Several US population centers a lready have concentrations in spatial analysis (e.g. Brown’s Population St udies and Training Center\, the Minnesota Pop Center\, UNC Chapel Hill’s C arolina Pop Center etc.). Over the past decade\, several new spatially-ori ented journals have also emerged:\n •         In 2006 -  Spatial Economic A nalysis\;\n •         In 2009 -  Spatial and Spatio-temporal Epidemiology a nd  Spatial Demography\n •         In 2013 - Special issue of Demographic R esearch focused on spatial demography.\nPopulation researchers and student s with interest in but limited or no experience with spatial analysis are invited to attend this discussion session to:\n \n •         Introduce spati al data and analysis to researchers and students through a spectrum of dif ferent projects\;\n •         Provide a dynamic and interactive environment for learning and discussion\;\n •         Be a catalyst for further discus sions about what kinds of further activities researchers and students woul d like the CPD to sponsor or organize relative to spatial analysis.\n \n Dep ending on the interests of members\, possible outcomes of this session cou ld include:\n •         additional information sessions\;\n •         specia lized training\;\n •         speakers at the social stats and population dy namics speaker series\;\n •         collaborations with ɬÀ﷬’s Geographic Information Centre staff and resources\;\n •         new research collabor ations among CPD members\, etc.\n \n Agenda:\n\n \n \n Speaker\n Duration\n Topic \n \n \n \n \n Sébastien Breau\, Associate Professor\,  Geography\n 30 min\n Dr. Breau will introduce basic notions of exploratory spatial data analysis us ing materials drawn from his work on the spatial dimensions of income ineq uality in Canada.\n \n \n  \n 20 min\n Questions and Discussion\n \n \n Sonia Lasz lo\, Associate Director\, Institute for the Study of International Develop ment and Associate Professor\, Economics\n 15 min\n Dr. Laszlo will report o n the spatial analysis used in a validation study of access to markets for rural agricultural producers in Peru. It compared self-reported and valid ated walking distance data from coffee\, rice and potato producing areas i n rural Peru\n \n \n  \n 10 min\n Questions and Discussion\n \n \n Sarah Brauner-O tto\, Assistant Professor\, Sociology\n 20 min\n Dr. Brauner-Otto will repor t on the spatial data available through the Chitwan Valley Family Study (C VFS) in Nepal and described several spatial analyses that she has done wit h these data.\n \n \n  \n 10 min\n Questions and Discussion\n \n \n  \n 15 min\n Dis cussion of next steps for CPD\n \n \n\n Questions and RSVP by June 19 : Heid i.hoernig [at] mcgill.ca\nLearn more here\n DTSTART:20150623T190000Z DTEND:20150623T210000Z LOCATION:Room 310\, Peterson Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0E6\, 3460 rue McTavish SUMMARY:Population research and spatial analysis: an interdisciplinary intr oduction and discussion session URL:/globalhealth/channels/event/population-research-a nd-spatial-analysis-interdisciplinary-introduction-and-discussion-session- 253599 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
