The Martine Roy Student Colloquium 2026

The Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism invites submissions of unpublished papers under the theme "2SLGBTQ+ rights in troubled times: contemporary issues and perspectives". We welcome a diversity of topics and global perspectives.

The Martine Roy Student Colloquium will be held in conjunction with the Michelle Douglas Lecture on March 11th, 2026. The lecture will be delivered by , Director of Legal at Egale Canada, who will also serve as the judge for the Colloquium. The Colloquium is named in honour of . After being discharged from the Canadian Armed Forces for her sexual orientation in 1983, Mme Roy became a passionate advocate for 2SLGBTQ+ rights. , and in 2023, she was named to the Order of Canada. Mme Roy continues her leadership and 2SLGBTQ+ advocacy to this day.

During the March 11 colloquium, selected students will have the opportunity to present their research papers. Authors of the top three essays will share a cash prize.

Papers should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words in length, not including bibliographies and footnotes. Please use a standard font in size 12 with one-inch margins. Citations should comply with the Canadian Guide to Uniform Legal Citation.

Please include an abstract of no more than 250 words with the submission. Writers are welcome to submit papers and abstracts in either English or French.

Participation is open to all ɬÀï·¬ law students, including graduate students, and essays already written for a class are welcome for submission. Papers should have been written in the last 24 months. Please submit papers, abstracts, and all questions to the Centre at chrlp.law [at] mcgill.caÌýby January 30th, 2026. Please put the Roy Colloquium in the subject line of the email.
