Clinical Scholars Program

THE DIVISION OF GENERAL INTERNAL MEDICINE invites applications to our Clinical Scholars Program (CSP). This program is currently part of the two-year General Internal Medicine (GIM) Fellowship Program at ɬÀï·¬, open to applicants who have completed training in Internal Medicine.

The CSP is a two-year program that provides formal training and mentorship to future clinician-scientists who wish to follow a clinical research career track or to future clinicians who wish to acquire knowledge and skills in clinical research. The focus of CSP is the acquisition of clinical research skills and expertise in a specific area of medicine. For GIM fellows, funding is through enrollment in the ɬÀï·¬ GIM postgraduate fellowship.

Some of the clinical research tracks available include:

WOMEN’S HEALTH

The fellow will follow advanced clinical training in one or more specialty areas of women’s health (such as menopausal health, cardiovascular health, cancer, osteoporosis and other musculo-skeletal disorders) and will complete a research project in the chosen area of added competency. The overarching objective of this stream is to develop an expertise in women’s health issues and appreciate gender influences on prevalence, incidence, clinical manifestations and outcomes of diseases.

MEDICAL EDUCATION

The fellow will complete the ɬÀï·¬ Postgraduate Fellowship in Health Sciences Education with a focus on developing skills and expertise in health sciences education research, and will be expected to develop a research project under the supervision of an assigned academic mentor.

THROMBOSIS MEDICINE

The fellow will participate in a focused curriculum in clinical research methods specific to venous thromboembolism and its specialty areas (e.g. peri-operative anticoagulation, cancer-associated thrombosis, obstetrical thrombosis), and will be expected to complete a research project under the supervision of an academic mentor.

HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH

The fellow will participate in Health Care Management courses that will develop skills uniquely directed towards management in the Health Care Sector, and acquire critical insight and managerial tools to research and improve existing management policies.

The medical research tracks can be followed in one of two CSP streams:

CLINICAL STREAM

As part of a postgraduate fellowship, the fellow, together with an academic mentor, will develop a course of clinical study appropriate to the trainee’s academic interests. Completion of a project is recommended; the project might focus on issues of quality assurance, patient education, outcome evaluation, etc.

RESEARCH STREAM

The fellow will complete a Master’s degree in, for example, Epidemiology or Medical Education under the supervision of an academic mentor, with a view to assuming an academic faculty position at a teaching hospital as a clinician scientist or clinician educator. (Must be accepted into the Master’s / Fellowship program of relevant ɬÀï·¬ Department either in the first or second year.)

Interested applicants should submit:
1. Curriculum vitae
2. 1-page proposal outlining the training expectations and long-term career goals
