He cut his studies short to mo ve to the West Coast and became involved in environmental issues. After te aching at the University of Victoria for a number of years\, he took a Ph. D. in Science Education\, focusing on the learning involved in advocacy ar ound science-based issues. After some brief post-doctoral work on Indigeno us approaches to knowledge / resource management\, he started working for Environment Canada in a program looking at the Ecosystem Effects of Geneti cally Modified Organisms.
