Doxastic Wrongs in Machine Reasoning”. \n\nThis event is open to all. Please write to julia.houwen [at] mcgill.ca  to confirm attendance and to receive a copy of the draft that will be dis cussed. A vegan lunch will be provided to those who confirm their attendan ce before noon on March 13th.\n\nAbstract\n\n“In this paper\, I argue that AI systems can hold beliefs and doxastically wrong individuals\, even in the absence of harm. To illustrate\, I argue that if we accept that a huma n employer's racist belief wrongs an applicant\, then we should also accep t that an AI system's racially biased classification does the same. I firs t examine different theories of belief – functionalism\, dispositionalism\ , and representationalism – and show that AI systems can be said to hold b eliefs under these frameworks. Second\, I build on the literature on doxas tic wrongs to argue that the beliefs of AI systems should be subject to mo ral evaluation\, just as human beliefs are\, since AI systems are increasi ngly integrated into socio-political relations. Third\, I note two key dif ferences between humans and AIs: AI beliefs are more controllable by desig ners and AI lacks moral agency. I argue that these differences do not unde rmine the claim that AI beliefs can wrong persons. Finally\, I explore des ign implications. I argue that AI systems should be designed to respect “o ught-to-be norms” that constrain the beliefs they should be allowed to for m. This analysis highlights the ethical significance of AI reasoning and t he necessity of evaluating AI systems beyond harm-based assessments.”\n DTSTART:20250317T160000Z DTEND:20250317T173000Z LOCATION:Room 927\, Leacock Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 2T7\, 855\, rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Work-in-Progress Session- Hugo Cossette-Lefebvre: 'Can AI Systems H old Wrongful Beliefs?
