Prophetic states: Rethinking the past and present entanglements of religion and politics

What does God have to do with the state in a putatively secular era? How do religious ideas shape the efforts of groups to craft alternative states, or to seek to change existing states from within?ÌýÌýHow do groups compete to mobilize sacred power in divided societies? Focusing on the 19thÌýcentury to the present, and with case studies from Europe, southern Africa and the Americas, this workshop explores the intersections of sacred and political power in societies shaped by Christianity and colonialism while claiming to have been emancipated from both.ÌýÌý
