How can such a simply stated goal be so difficult? In this talk\, we will discuss the work and motivation o f various mathematicians who developed the tools used in everyday statisti cs. We will examine historical questions such as 'Why was the development of least squares so fundamental to statistics?' and 'Why did the condition al probability formula create such divide among statisticians?'. We will t hen present the major areas and problems that are now the main focus of st atistical researchers and then briefly comment on the different directions statistics may take in the future. \n\n \n\nSee you all there! \n\n \n\nA ll graduate students are invited. As with all talks in the graduate studen t seminar\, this talk will be accessible to all graduate students in math and stats. This seminar was made possible by funding from the ɬÀï·¬ mathe matics and statistics departmentand GSAMS.\n DTSTART:20170317T170000Z DTEND:20170317T170000Z LOCATION:1025 (10th Floor) - Graduate Lounge\, Burnside Hall\, CA\, QC\, Mo ntreal\, H3A 0B9\, 805 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:mathstats grad student seminar URL:/mathstat/channels/event/mathstats-grad-student-se minar-267166 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
