In this lecture I give a review of recent develo pments on harmonic analytic aspects of tensor categories. This unifies Pop a's work on approximation properties for standard invariants  of subfactor s\, and the functional analytic study of quantum groups\, both motivated b y the noncommutative harmonic analysis\, while allowing us to bring in int eresting ideas from quantum field theory.
