 em. The 'variational approach' is a simple but\n	powerful idea that gives i
 nsights in a number of disciplines\,\n	including classical mechanics\, stat
 istical mechanics\, quantum field theory\, and optics. No physics knowledg
 e required.\n\nAll graduate students are invited. As with all talks in the
 \n	graduate student seminar\, this talk will be accessible to all\n	graduate
  students in math and stats.\n\nThis seminar was made possible by funding
