Elijah Maubert on Algorithmic Pricing | CBC Listen

Published: 21 April 2026

April 2, 2026 | MPP'25 Elijah Maubert spoke to CBC about algorithmic pricing as Manitoba moves to ban the tactic under Bill 49. Drawing on a 2025 Max Bell Policy Lab project co-authored for the Competition Bureau of Canada, Maubert weighs both sides: AI pricing can help smaller firms compete, but it can also produce unintentional collusion when competitors rely on the same software. "For the longest time, collusion necessarily needed a meeting of minds," he notes, "but in this digital age and with algorithms, they don't need to meet; they can just do it in their little black box." The paper recommends a public registry of firms using algorithmic pricing and clear regulatory guidance on its responsible use.
