Outstanding CIHR applicants maintain research momentum thanks to funding support from generous donors

Thanks to the generous support of the River Philip and Trottier Family Foundations, the 涩里番 Health Centre Foundation and The Institute have awarded the latest round of Sustaining Excellence Grants.

The Sustaining Excellence Grants Program supports outstanding researchers at The Institute who ranked within the top 40% of CIHR Project Grant applications in the Spring 2025 competition but were not funded. The goal is to maintain the momentum of their research programs for an additional year, providing time and resources to revise and resubmit their proposals and strengthen their chances of success. Eligible applicants must hold a primary researcher designation at The Institute and demonstrate strong peer-reviewed potential.

This year鈥檚 awardees are:

  • : A new therapeutic approach for Crohn鈥檚 disease
  • : Vaping-induced impairment of innate defense mechanisms underlies lung disease pathogenesis
  • : Sex-specific regulation of type 2 immunity in the lung: alarmins, ILC2s, and maladaptive inflammation in allergic airways disease
  • : Investigating oncohistones and oncohistone mimics driven vulnerabilities in bone sarcomas
  • : Web-based Home Exercise and Education Program for MILD COPD: The HELP-MILD Study
  • : Beta-Hydroxy-Beta-Methylbutyrate (HMB) for Preventing Muscle Atrophy in Obese Adults with Type 2 Diabetes Undergoing Semaglutide (GLP-1 RA) Treatment
  • : The role of macrophages and cytotoxic T cells in mediating killing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in alveoli of people with HIV

By providing up to one year of funding, the Sustaining Excellence program enables researchers to refine high-quality proposals, respond to reviewer feedback and remain competitive in national peer-reviewed competitions. The initiative reflects The Institute鈥檚 commitment to supporting scientific excellence and ensuring that promising research continues to advance, even in a highly competitive funding environment.
