This instrument was used to measure volumes or pressures in聽organs such as the聽heart聽or聽lung,聽or in a聽limb.聽聽A聽flexible聽tube聽connected聽the聽narrow pipe at the bottom聽of the recorder聽(A)聽to聽the organ.聽聽An increase聽(or聽decrease)聽in聽the pressure in that pipe聽pushed聽up (or聽pulled聽down) the aluminium piston. The聽latter聽was attached to a聽lever聽(B)聽that is in turn attached to a聽recording device聽such as聽a kymograph.
