MPU mission statement

The Medical Physics Unit (MPU) at ɬÀï·¬ is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and diverse community where all members, regardless of background, are valued. We recognize that scientific progress thrives in diverse environments and that diversity enriches research, innovation, and patient care. Our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) is reflected in our recruitment, mentorship, and policies, which aim to provide equal opportunities for everyone, particularly those from under-represented groups.

We strive to create an environment free from discrimination and harassment, where all individuals are respected and supported. We actively work to eliminate barriers to full participation in our academic and research activities. Our commitment to excellence in medical physics is rooted in the belief that diverse perspectives lead to better research, improved clinical practices, and more effective cancer treatments and diagnoses.

The MPU community is united in upholding these values, and we are committed to continuous improvement in fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all members. Our efforts include outreach, support for underrepresented groups, addressing biases in research, and creating safe spaces for all students, faculty, and staff.

EDI efforts within the ɬÀï·¬ Medical Physics Unit

As part of its efforts to propose a more inclusive learning and research environment, the ɬÀï·¬ MPU is active on two specific fronts.

First,Ìýensuring a diverse and representative student body is a key direction of ɬÀï·¬'s EDI Strategic Plan. Among applicants to the our CAMPEP-accredited MSc and Graduate Diploma programs, the proportion of women who were offered admission and matriculated in for entering classes 2019–2025 reflected the proportion of women among applicants, as noted in the table below. Identification information is self-reported by applicants, and collected by ɬÀï·¬.

ɬÀï·¬ stage Median number (percentage)
Applications from women 27
which is (47% of applicants)
Offers to women applicants 6
which is (40% of offers)
Women who matriculate 4
which is (42% of matriculations)

Second,Ìýmaintaining an equitable research environment requires representativeness among role models such as invited speakers. The ɬÀï·¬ MPU tracks the gender of speakers invited as part of the Friday noon seminars. For the period covering academic years 2011-2012 through 2024-2025, the proportion of women guest speakers was 31%. Since 2021, the MPU has made conscious efforts to increase the representation of women among invited speakers, and the proportion has increased to 44%. This compares favourably with the representation of women in the medical physics community in Canada; notably, among members of the Ìýwho answered the 2023 COMP survey (accessible only to COMP members), 38% of COMP members were women.

The MPU is committed to upholding EDI principles and will be taking action on other aspects in the near future.
