The joint European Space Agen cy–Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (ESA–JAXA) Earth Clouds\, Aerosols a nd Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) mission is scheduled for launch in 2018 and features the first atmospheric Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) with Dopple r capability in space. Here\, the performance of the CPR in i) detecting t hese clouds and their boundaries\, and ii) measuring the Doppler velocity of drizzle particles is evaluated. Observations from the Atmospheric Radia tion Measurements (ARM) Mobile Facility at the Azores and Marine ARM GPCI Investigation of Clouds are used as input to a CPR simulator. The extensiv e ground-based observations are treated as the “truth” and are compared to the simulated EarthCARE CPR observations. The impact of the surface echo return\, radar sensitivity\, range resolution\, and along-track integratio n are discussed.\n DTSTART:20160127T200000Z DTEND:20160127T203000Z LOCATION:Room 934\, Burnside Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0B9\, 805 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Student Seminar: David Burns URL:/meteo/channels/event/student-seminar-david-burns- 255069 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
