However\, research has largely focused on its mechanisms in a few model organisms a nd in humans\, limiting our understanding of how sleep varies across ecolo gical contexts\, populations\, and species. This talk will examine current knowledge on the ecology and evolution of sleep and identify the critical gaps that must be addressed to explain its ultimate evolutionary function .\n\nPaul Antoine Libourel\n\nResearcher\, Center for Functional and Evolu tionary Ecology\, France\n\nPaul-Antoine Libourel is a CNRS researcher who se work lies at the intersection of neuroscience\, ecology\, and engineeri ng. Trained in biomedical engineering and electronic imaging\, he began hi s career as an instrumentation engineer at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris\, where he contributed to research on locomotion and biom echanics. In 2009\, he joined the SLEEP team at the Neuroscience Research Center of Lyon (CRNL) and later earned his PhD\, focusing on the evolution ary origins of sleep states in reptiles.\n\nOver the past 15 years\, Paul- Antoine has developed an eco-physiological approach to studying sleep in n atural environments\, moving beyond traditional laboratory models. He rece ntly joined the Centre for Functional and Evolutionary Ecology (CEFE) in M ontpellier\, where he investigates sleep from an ecological and evolutiona ry perspective. His research integrates neurophysiology\, biologging techn ologies\, and behavioral analysis to explore the diversity\, evolution\, a nd adaptive functions of sleep across species.\n\n \n\nHe has led and cont ributed to numerous international research projects on sleep in a wide ran ge of animals\, including reptiles\, penguins\, sharks\, and elephant seal s.\n\n \n\nPaul-Antoine Libourel is also the inventor of innovative tools for studying sleep both in natural environments and in the laboratory. \n \n \n\nHis current work aims to understand how ecological pressures\, such as predation risk and climate change\, shape sleep strategies in wild ani mals.\n\n \n DTSTART:20260324T200000Z DTEND:20260324T210000Z LOCATION:de Grandpre Communications Centre\, The Neuro\, Montreal Neurologi cal Institute\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 2B4\, 3801 rue University SUMMARY:Killam Seminar Series: Ecology and evolution of sleep: Understandin g sleep beyond the laboratory URL:/neuro/channels/event/killam-seminar-series-ecolog y-and-evolution-sleep-understanding-sleep-beyond-laboratory-371584 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
