Without broader institutional leadership, Jahn warns, only wealthy universities will make the shift, turning deep thinking into "a luxury good."</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-primary-image field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img class="no-float" src="/channels/files/channels/styles/wysiwyg_medium/public/channels/image/the_globe_mail_banner.png?itok=XCJuy1BL" width="160" height="23" alt="" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-published-date field-type-datestamp field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="custom-multi-date"><div class="multi-date first"><span class="label">Published: </span><span class="day">27 </span><span class="month">July </span><span class="year">2026</span></div></div></div></div></div> Mon, 27 Jul 2026 16:48:48 -0400 News: Nicholas King Co-Authors BMJ Article on AI as a Commercial Determinant of Health /channels/channels/news/nicholas-king-co-authors-bmj-article-ai-commercial-determinant-health-373628 <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><p>July 21, 2026 | <a href="/maxbellschool/our-people/mpp-teaching-faculty/nicholas-king">Nicholas King</a> has co-authored a new BMJ article, "Artificial intelligence as a new commercial determinant of health," led by Itai Bavli (UBC). The paper proposes a new analytical framework to help identify how commercial actors are using AI to shape health behaviours and the flow of health information. The authors argue that AI is making commercial influence more targeted and harder to detect, from personalised chatbots to algorithm-driven social media feeds.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field
