Nineteen members of the ɬ�﷬ community, including President Deep Saini, have been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal. The medal is conferred on individuals who have made significant contributions to Canada or to a particular province, territory, region or community, or have made an outstanding achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada.

The Canadian Council of Academics (CCA) has formed an expert panel to examine how Indigenous science can be supported to advance policy and governance in a way that achieves reciprocal benefits for all people in Canada. Using food sovereignty as a case study, the panel will develop a framework that can be applied across a range of policy issues.

Chandra Madramootoo: A lifetime of service to ɬ�﷬, Macdonald Campus and the world

In 1974, Chandra Madramootoo arrived at Macdonald Campus to pursue his BSc in Agricultural Engineering. He never left.

“I loved the program. I loved the professors. I loved my courses,” said Madramootoo. “It was giving me exactly what I wanted in life. I was fulfilling a dream.”

After also earning his MSc (1981) and his PhD (1985) at Mac, he accepted an 11th hour offer from ɬ�﷬ for an assistant professorship, declining opportunities at other universities.

The Department of Bioresource Engineering (BREE) enjoyed a visit last month from David Saint-Jacques, astronaut and Deputy Director, Lunar Exploration at the Canadian Space Agency, and BREE graduate Chris Patterson. They met with BREE undergrad and grad students who presented their projects, highlighting links between their research and bioregenerative life support system goals for extended space missions on the lunar surface and beyond in the near future.

Rising demand at food banks indicative of Canada's affordability crisis

Food banks across Canada set a new record for demand in 2024, with more than two million monthly visits—nearly double the rate seen five years prior, reports CBC News.

One reason for the spike in demand is the rising cost of food.

"What we're encountering right now is a problem where food inflation is bigger than general inflation," economist and agronomist Pascal Thériault, Senior Faculty Lecturer at ɬ�﷬, told CBC.
