Put roughl y: such epistemic conditions seem to not only be tied to standards that we can conform to\, but also ones that matter in more significant ways than the rules of a randomly chosen social club. But is the idea that epistemol ogy is “normative” correct? And\, if so\, how exactly should we understand what the normativity of epistemic standards consists in? In this paper\, we explore some of the complexities of these questions and chart a range o f possible answers. A core part of this discussion involves exploring thre e different topics\, and how they interact: 1) theories of normativity\, 2 ) theories of the epistemic\, and 3) different ways of understanding the c laim that epistemology (or some epistemic condition) is normative. On the last front\, we distinguish three different foundational projects that phi losophers can engage in with respect to epistemology: what we call the pro jects of “metaepistemology”\, “substantive normative epistemology”\, and t he “conceptual ethics of epistemology”. We illustrate how our discussion c an help illuminate important aspects of debates in epistemology\, and poss ible ways forward\, including in debates about ideology and ideology criti que\, moral encroachment\, and the debate between pragmatists and evidenti alists.\n DTSTART:20221007T193000Z DTEND:20221007T213000Z LOCATION:Room 927\, Leacock Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 2T7\, 855 r ue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:David Plunkett\, 'On the Nature and Foundations of Epistemic Normat ivity' URL:/philosophy/channels/event/david-plunkett-nature-a nd-foundations-epistemic-normativity-342556 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
