 ristics of a sensory stimulus or to reflect a rhythmic motor control for e
 xample. Changes in firing pattern often involve particular ion channels an
 d are intimately related to the function of the circuit. Our recent work s
 hows how astrocytes\, astrocytic coupling and the astrocytic calcium-bindi
 ng protein\, S100b\, and modulate Na+ currents by regulating the extracell
 ular Ca2 + concentration and determine the neuronal firing pattern in brai
 nstem and cortical circuits. \n\nThe F.C. MacIntosh Lectureship supports s
