ɬÀï·¬

First day as Provost and Executive Vice-President (Academic)

Dear members of the ɬÀï·¬ community,

Today is my first day as Provost, and as I begin this new role, I am thrilled, humbled, and uplifted by a profound sense of possibility for what we can build together.

ɬÀï·¬ has been my academic home for many years, shaping me in ways that are both professional and deeply personal. This institution has given me intellectual challenge, purpose, enduring relationships, and a deep belief in the public value of higher education. To serve ɬÀï·¬ in this role is an honour, and I take on my responsibilities with gratitude and care.

I am continually inspired by the people who make ɬÀï·¬ what it is. Our students bring curiosity, creativity, and courage to their learning. Our faculty set global standards for excellence in teaching, research, and social impact. Our staff sustain the university with extraordinary dedication and professionalism. Our alumni extend ɬÀ﷬’s reach and influence around the world. You are the heart of this institution, and I am privileged to work alongside you.

As Provost, I am committed to fostering a campus culture grounded in trust, ambition, empathy, responsibility, and integrity. These values guide how I lead, how I listen, and how I make decisions—particularly when choices are complex or contested. ɬÀï·¬ thrives because it is a place of strong ideas and diverse perspectives, and our collective strength lies in engaging one another openly and respectfully, even when we disagree.

I am equally determined that we sustain the important, principled progress ɬÀï·¬ has made over the last decade advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion. Academic excellence depends on our ability to recognize, nurture, and support talent wherever it exists. This requires sustained attention to individuals and communities historically underserved in higher education, and a continued commitment to ensuring that opportunity and advancement are not constrained by identity, experience, or ideology. Such work is integral to our academic mission and must remain a priority in the systems we steward and the decisions we make.

ɬÀï·¬ is also entering a period of meaningful change that requires our engagement. Through Horizon ɬÀï·¬, we are called to embrace an ethos of transformation and approach change thoughtfully, intelligently, and openly. We are all being invited to adopt a change-positive mindset. Practically speaking, we are asked to approach new ideas with curiosity, rather than defaulting to doubt.

This ethos, along with President Saini’s four priorities, will guide the development of ɬÀ﷬’s next Strategic Academic Plan, work that will begin imminently. I am committed to meaningful consultation with our community as we imagine ɬÀ﷬’s academic life over the next five to ten years across disciplines, methodologies, and perspectives. The Plan will be shaped in genuine partnership and will reflect our shared ambitions. I am confident that, working collaboratively and with openness and resolve, we will rise to the challenges of this moment.

I am very much looking forward to getting started and to working closely with you as we shape the future of this remarkable institution together.

With warm regards,

Angela Campbell
