It c an also deepen our fundamental understanding of natural phenomena\, by bui lding gene circuits and biological systems from the bottom up. Synthetic g ene circuits are able to perform a variety of useful tasks\, but despite b eing made from well-characterized biological components\, their precision and robustness are usually much lower than their natural counterparts. Our hypothesis for this difference is that synthetic circuits have so far bee n designed mostly without accounting for the inherent stochastic gene expr ession in living cells.\n\nTo demonstrate this\, I will show how harnessin g principles from stochastic theory to redesign a classic synthetic oscill ator (the repressilator\, which helped jump-start the field of synthetic b iology) helped produce oscillations that rival those of natural clocks. I will then describe how this motivated us to engineer hundreds of oscillato rs using a newly developed method for screening dynamical phenotypes\, thu s allowing us to explore areas that are beyond our current theoretical und erstanding.
