Redpath Museum and Physics Outreach bring science to life at ɬ�﷬'s Bellairs Research Institute

This past September, St. James Parish in Barbados celebrated We Gatherin’, a year-long festival of Barbadian heritage, culture and community. As part of the festivities, ɬ�﷬’s Bellairs Research Institute hosted a day-long Science Adventure for local schoolchildren featuring a visit from ɬ�﷬’s Redpath Museum and the Physics Outreach Committee.

The Redpath Museum's "Best Kept Secret"

The Redpath Museum's team recently had the opportunity to collaborate with Montréal Museums as part of its "The Best Kept Secret" campaign. Produced as part of Montreal Museums Month, this campaign showcases 42 Montreal museums through short videos that explore lesser-known aspects of these institutions.

Visit the Redpath Museum starting January 10

The Redpath Museum at ɬ�﷬ will re-open its doors on Tuesday, January 10, 2023.

The Museum will welcome visitors Tuesday to Friday, 9:30am to 4:30pm.

In advance of the re-opening on January 10, the Museum will begin taking bookings for group tours and school visits from December 19, 2022.

Congratulations to the team of graduate students who have received funding support from ɬ�﷬ Science Outreach and from an NSERC Student Ambassador Award for the development and implementation of a lesson plan to accompany the popular STEMM Diversity @ ɬ�﷬ colouring and activity book! This lesson plan will launch in the Fall semester, and showcase the diversity of science and the scientists who do it.

This summer the ɬ�﷬ Sustainability Projects Fund (SPF) turned ten years old and it marked the occasion by giving the 130 year old Redpath Museum some funding help. Thanks SPF for subsidizing our new outreach project to create a "Museum in a Box" and for help to buy photography equipment so that we could create virtual StoryMap tours such as the ɬ�﷬ Tree Tour and the ɬ�﷬ Stones and fossils tour.

Museum and Dawson family - news from our connections

The Dawson family and ɬ�﷬ have a long and storied connection. Sir John William Dawson, founder of the Museum in 1882 and Principal of ɬ�﷬ for 38 years died in 1899. His great grandaughter Kathleen Godfrey, graduated in 2019 with Masters in Anthropology. You can read about her conservation and social justice work here. On August 10, 2020, Kathleen's grandmother, Joan Harrington, died at the age of 101.

New species of ancient swimming reptile discovered by Museum student

Remembering Henry Reiswig - the sponge specialist

Henry Reiswig, the former Biology professor and curator of Invertebrate Zoology at the Redpath Museum, died on July 4, 2020. You can read his obituary here:

His daughter Amy says: "He died in his lab in the garage, with microscope slides on the warmer, doing what he loved: science."

Museum researcher warns of increased growth in Quebec tick populations

According to Virginie Millien, an assistant professor at ɬ�﷬ and curator of zoology and paleontology at ɬ�﷬'s Redpath Museum, warmer temperatures preferentially benefit one of the Lyme diesease tick's most important hosts, the white-footed mouse, which has expanded its range northwards, and outcompeted other mice. The result is that Lyme disease has become a far more pressing health issue in southeastern Canada than ever before.

Captain Catalyst wins Youth Mentor Award

Captain Catalyst (aka Steve Rosenstein from Montreal) has won the 2019 Youth Mentor Award from the Canadian Wildlife Federation. This award honours an individual who has made significant contribution in creating and/or presenting programs that introduce young people to the importance of conservation, habitat or wildlife. Captain Catalyst regularly presents his Science Playground at the Redpath Museum and in many Montreal area Daycares and schools.

STEMM and diversity @ ɬ�﷬ gets special recognition

This year the Principal's Prize for Public Engagement through Media acknowledged special recognition to the STEMM Diversity @ ɬ�﷬, a project spearheaded by Museum graduate students Charles Cong and Jessica Ford. The jury was impressed that "Although the group is just one year old, it has already been identified as a model for other universities in Quebec, an indication of their success. Their goal is to improve and promote diversity in STEMM subjects.

Museum has lost a friend: Ann Van Fossen

Ann Van Fossen, the author of the museum publication: Tea and Fossils: a brief history of the Redpath Museum, died last week. Born in 1933 and educated at Swarthmore College (B.A. in Political Science) and University of Iowa (M.A. in History), Ann started her volunteer work at the Museum in 2008. She had moved to Montreal with her husband Dick Van Fossen, a retired English professor, after living in many communities here and in the United States such as Cambridge, MA; Durham, NC; Mount Vernon, Iowa; Chicago, IL; Pagosa Springs, CO and Middlebury, VT.

Barbara Lawson, Curator of World Cultures, has retired after more than 30 years at ɬ�﷬’s Redpath Museum. Under her curatorship, the collections were expanded in size and scope and a World Cultures gallery was inaugurated in 2004. This was the first time an exhibition area specifically designated for cultural materials was established since the Redpath Museum’s founding in 1882. She has been instrumental in developing documentation for the Museum at the national and international level and an inspiring lecturer and devoted mentor to numerous students and volunteers.

Redpath Museum remembers Abe Levine (1924-2017)

The Redpath Museum lost a great friend and donor on July 30, 2017. What started with a small donation of about 200 shells in 1994 has grown into a permanent exhibit entitled "Conchologycitus - the Abe Levine Shells". Located on the second floor of the Redpath Museum it commemorates Abe Levine's life long passion and admiration to "the home wherein the Mollusc dwells".

Museum volunteer wins award

Peter Tarassoff has won the Pinch Medal from the Mineralogical Association of Canada (MAC). This medal is named for William Wallace Pinch of Rochester, New York, in recognition of his enormous and selfless contributions to mineralogy through the identification of ideal specimens for study and through his generosity in making them available to the academic community.
