This sessi on offers a practical overview of the patent system\, tailored to the real ities of research and development in academic and start-up environments in the life sciences.\n\nThe presentation will discuss the core requirements for patentability\, including what can (and cannot) be patented\, the rol es of novelty\, non-obviousness/inventive step\, and utility/industrial ap plicability\, and how these standards are applied in for example biotechno logy and pharmaceuticals. Particular attention will be given to common “li fe sciences” pressure points such as experimental support\, enablement/suf ficiency and claim scope versus data.\n\nWe then turn to filing strategy a nd timing: how to align publication plans and ongoing research activities and timelines with patent protection. The session will map typical patenti ng pathways (including priority filings\, provisional-style approaches\, P CT/international filing\, and national phase entry)\, and explain what hap pens during prosecution - office actions\, amendments\, and claim drafting choices. Attendees will leave with a clear sense of realistic timelines f rom initial filing through grant\, and how to plan around them.\n\nFinally \, the presentation will address the role of patenting in leveraging and c ommercializing innovations\, and related strategic decisions. Patent enfor cement and risk will also be discussed: what a patent actually lets you do \, and how infringement is assessed in practice\, including clearance and freedom-to-operate considerations.\n\nDesigned to be accessible without sa crificing rigor\, this session equips researchers and research administrat ors with a clearer understanding of how patent strategy supports scientifi c impact - and how early choices can materially affect downstream value an d commercialization to bring life sciences innovations to market.\n\nEvent Details\n\nDate & Time: Tuesday\, May 5 2026\, from 10:00am to 11:30am\n \nLocation:\n\n\n In-person attendees: D2R Office (1010 Sherbrooke Street O \, Suite 1800\, Lovelace Conference Room) Space is limited!\n Virtual atten dees: online on Zoom.\n\n\nSpeaker\n\nSerge Shahinian\, Ph.D.\n\nPartner - Patent Agent - Co-leader of the Intellectual Property Group\n\nSerge Shah inian is a partner and patent agent in Lavery’s intellectual property grou p. He has been practicing in the intellectual property field since 2000\, following prior doctoral and post-doctoral training in biochemistry\, biol ogy\, and genetics.\n\nSerge’s patent practice includes the areas of biote chnology\, pharmaceutical and chemical\, covering a wide range of related technologies in the health\, agricultural\, food\, environmental and indus trial sciences. His practice includes the procurement of patent rights\, p roviding opinions and counselling in patentability\, validity and infringe ment matters\, as well as providing support concerning patent matters in l itigation\, transactions and financing in the biotechnology and pharmaceut ical sectors.\n\nRegistration\n\nRegister here to join in person\n\nRegist er here to join virtually on Zoom\n DTSTART:20260505T140000Z DTEND:20260505T153000Z LOCATION:Lovelace Conference Room\, CA\, 18th floor\, D2R Office\, 1010 She rbrooke O SUMMARY:D2R x Lavery | Patenting Your Invention: A Guide for Researchers URL:/research/channels/event/d2r-x-lavery-patenting-yo ur-invention-guide-researchers-372391 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
