 sor at the University of Bremen and Group leader of the Joint Research Gro
 up for Deep-Sea Ecology and Technology at the Max Planck Institute for Mar
 ine Microbiology. This public lecture is organized jointly with the Consul
 ate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Montreal.\n\nAbout the L
 ecture: \n\nWith this talk\, Prof. Antje Boetius will explore current know
 ledge of life in the deep Arctic Ocean\, and the coupling between the icy 
 surface waters and the bottom of the sea. The extreme seasonality in light
  availability\, the ice cover\, but also seabed processes like volcanism s
 hape a unique and diverse seafloor community. International research of th
 e past decades has demonstrated that the effects of climate change\, forem
 ost the retreat and thinning of sea-ice\, directly affects the composition
  and distribution of life in the deep Arctic. The talk will also discuss o
 pportunities to collaborate internationally to better understand change in
  the Arctic Ocean and the needs for protecting life in the sea.\n\n \n
