 os'.\n\nProf. Freedman is a renowned astronomer who was instrumental in pr
 ecisely measuring the Hubble constant and determining the age of the unive
 rse. She is the former director of the Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena.
  She initiated the Giant Magellan Telescope project and served as chair of
  its board of directors from the project's inception in 2003 until 2015. I
 n 2014 she joined the faculty of the University of Chicago as the John and
  Marion Sullivan University Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics.\n\n\n
 About the Anna I. McPherson Lecture\n\nThe annual Anna I. McPherson Lectur
 e in Physics was established in honour of Anna Isobel McPherson\, a member
  of the ɬÀï·¬ physics faculty from 1940 until her death in 1979. Over her
  long association with the Department of Physics\, Anna McPherson made imp
 ortant contributions in teaching\, research\, and counselling\, helping an
 d teaching a very large number of students. The McPherson lecture series w
 as established to acknowledge her outstanding generosity and her many valu
 ed academic contributions. The mandate of these lectures is to bring a dis
 tinguished physicist to ɬÀï·¬ each year to give two lectures\, one of whi
 ch is a lecture for the general public.\n
