Honours FAQ

Frequently asked questions and answers

How do I find a supervisor?聽

The search for a supervisor requires initiative on your part, and is largely informal. To get started, think about what topics and questions might interest you then seek out a professor with similar research interests. Use department websites and ask around to other students. Professors may have links to their research team websites listed under their profiles on Department website people pages where further detail can be found about their ongoing research programs and projects, their current and past students, as well as general information how to "join the team". Use these resources and "do your homework" before contacting them. Once you鈥檝e identified a professor that might be suitable, contact them to try and set up a meeting.

How do I choose a topic for my Honours thesis?

Ideally, you鈥檒l have a specific question you鈥檇 like to address in your research, but if you only have a general idea, that鈥檚 ok too.听 A professor that is on board with advising your Honours thesis will be able to help you narrow down a research topic and question.

Am I supposed to participate to a professor's research or do I develop my own thesis?

Either way! You can discuss this with professor(s) that you seek out as a potential supervisor.
