Biography: 

Barry L. Stein, MDCM is the director of the Center for Colon and Rectal surgery at the ɬÀï·¬ Health Center.  He holds the rank of Assistant Professor of Surgery and Oncology at ɬÀï·¬.

His specialty interests include the endoscopic management of polyps, surgical treatment of colon and rectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease.  His practice includes the extensive use of laparoscopic techniques to treat these surgical diseases since 1992. His research interests include the multimodal management of rectal cancer, preoperative radiotherapy for rectal cancer in a watchful waiting program, Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS), Minimally Invasive Surgery, Prehabilitation in the deconditioned patient.

He also has a special interest in surgical education and served on the General Surgery Residency Training committee for many years as well as served as the Assistant Program Director in General Surgery for many years. He has earned multiple teaching awards at ɬÀï·¬ in the Department of Surgery.

Dr. Stein earned his medical degree at ɬÀï·¬ in Montreal and then completed his General Surgery training at ɬÀï·¬.  He subsequently did a 1 year GI fellowship at ɬÀï·¬.  After that he completed 2 years of subspecialty training at the Lahey Clinic, Boston, Massachusetts.  He returned to Montreal and worked at the Jewish General Hospital for 10 years before moving over to the ɬÀï·¬ Health Center and establishing the Center for Colon and Rectal Surgery.

He is certified by the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in General Surgery, the American Board of Surgery, the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery and holds a specialist certificate in Colon and Rectal Surgery from the College des Medecins du Quebec.

Dr. Stein is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, the American College of Surgeons and the American Board of Colon & Rectal Surgery and sits on the medical advisory board of the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada.
