Tyres are indispensable to modern life, powering mobility, enabling industrial operations, and supporting resource extraction. Yet their environmental footprint is significant, and the scale of global tyre use demands a deeper understanding of the challenges across their entire value chain.

One of the most pressing concerns is the generation of tyre wear particles—microscopic pollutants that release hazardous chemicals into the environment. Researchers are actively exploring ways to reduce abrasion, develop safer materials, and design tyres that balance sustainability with performance.

End-of-life tyre management is another critical focus. Mismanaged tyres can lead to severe environmental consequences, including resource loss, pest infestations, and catastrophic fires. Improving recovery rates and implementing responsible disposal strategies are essential steps toward mitigating these risks.

Australia is emerging as a leader in tyre circularity, investing in research that transforms used tyres into high-value market products. These repurposed materials, while distinct from traditional tyres, introduce new environmental considerations that require tailored approaches.

In this seminar, Dr. Linda Mitchell will guide us through the environmental challenges and opportunities across the tyre value chain, highlighting how circular economy principles can minimize waste and pollution, recirculate materials at their highest value, and reshape the future of tyre sustainability.
