This is free\, open to the public\, no registration required. Full program below. For questions\, tim.moore [at] mcgill.ca (email Prof. Tim Moore\, Director of TISPP). \n \n\nJoin us to learn about the effects of hu man activities on the nitrogen cycle\, nitrogen footprints and their manag ement.\n\n\n Humans have fundamentally altered the global nitrogen cycle - even more profoundly than the carbon cycle. The creation of ‘reactive nitr ogen’ has fueled human progress and helped to vastly increase food product ion\, but has unintended consequences for air and water pollution that hav e immense costs to society. Read Galloway and Leach (2016) 'Sustainability : Your feet’s too big' (Nature Geoscience 9: 97-8) and listen to Fats Wall er's song 'Your feet's too big'. There is now a movement to better identif y the sources and effects of ‘reactive nitrogen’\, to create a ‘nitrogen f ootprint’ at individual\, institutional and national levels and examine wa ys to reduce the magnitude of this footprint. This Symposium examines the science\, causes and effects of accelerated nitrogen use\, the development of nitrogen footprints and ways in which footprints can be reduced\, eith er personally or institutionally. It brings together researchers from the USA and Canada\, presents the N footprint for ɬÀï·¬ and includes a panel discussion on what can be done.\n\nSchedule:\n\n\n 14:30 Welcome and outlin e of Program: Tim Moore\, Director TISPP\, ɬÀï·¬\n 14:35 The gl obal nitrogen cycle and anthropogenic effects: James Galloway\, University of Virginia\n 15:05 Social and economic costs of nitrogen pollution: Jana Compton\, US EPA\n 15:35 N-Print and its combination with carbon footprints : Allison Leach\, University of New Hampshire\n 16:00 The ɬÀï·¬ N footprin t: Aidan Goertzen (with Graham MacDonald\, Tim Moore and Brian Robinson)\, ɬÀï·¬\n 16:25 Calculate your personal N footprint (access the online N-print calculator): Izzy Castner\, University of Virginia\n 16:45 O ptions for managing N footprints: A Panel Discussion\n \n Moderator: Graham MacDonald\, Geography\, ɬÀï·¬\n Panellists:\n \n Jana Compton\, U S EPA\n Jim Galloway\, University of Virginia\n Subhasis Ghoshal\, TISED\, M cGill University\n Aidan Goertzen\, ɬÀï·¬\n Audrey Moores\, Chem istry\, ɬÀï·¬\n Kathleen Ng\, Office of Sustainability\, ɬÀï·¬ University\n Brian Robinson\, Geography\, ɬÀï·¬\n Oliver De Vol pi\, Residences\, ɬÀï·¬\n \n \n \n \n 17:45 Closing remarks and aud ience N footprint results\n 18:00 Reception\n  \n\n DTSTART:20161118T193000Z DTEND:20161118T230000Z LOCATION:Faculty Club\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0E5\, 3450 rue McTavish SUMMARY:Nitrogen\, Nitrogen Footprints and their Management URL:/tised/channels/event/nitrogen-nitrogen-footprints -and-their-management-263492 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
